In Botswana the average weight of an adult was estimated at 1,391 pounds. When attached by predators, buffalos engage in mobbing behavior and stick close together. A buffalo responds to the distress call of a threatened member and tries to rescue it, whether the member is an adult or a calf. They have been recorded killing lions and chasing lions up trees and keeping them there for two hours, after the lions have killed a member of their group. The photograph was taken from a safari vehicle stationed at the Atzaro Okavango Camp.
