Phra Pathommachedi or Phra Pathom Chedi ('first holy stupa'), is located in Nakhon Pathom, one of the oldest cities in Thailand, 55km south of Bangkok. At 120m, the Sri Lankan styled bell shape stupa is believed to be the tallest Buddhist chedi in the world. Its origins date back to ancient times and a sacred site is believed to have existed there since the reign of Emperor Ashoka. The present monument was rebuilt over an older stupa in the 19th century by King Mongkut and finished in 1870.
