Pictured is a bust of Portugese physician and scientist Bernardino Antonio Gomes Junior. He was born in Lisbon in 1806 and died there in 1877. He was the first Portugese physician to use choloroform and an ether inhalation device, revolutionizing the techniques of anesthesia. The sculpture was created in 1930 by sculptor Antonio da Costa Motta.
Inscriptions on the stone base include his name and Physician of the Navy 1806 - 1877, wise, hygienist, distinct botanist and important physician. In the background is part of the largest tile mural in Lisbon, by Andre Saraiva.
