The Chinese Six Companies or Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Society is for the assistance of settling new Chinese immigrants into San Francisco. Like many old family immigrants to San Francisco, many of the old family Chinese can trace their family history back to the Gold Rush. As this Chinese population grew, this caused frictions with the varied European American communities as well as tensions within the Chinese community itself. The Chinese Six Companies were not a business association as used in English, but an association of the six most prominent Chinese groups from California, all from the same surrounding region of The Pearl River Delta. Their goal was to reduce these tensions with the non Chinese, as well as within this Chinese community itself. As seen 5 June 2024.
