Grain Drying in China (Photo Series 1-10) Chinese leaders say: 'The Chinese people must firmly hold their rice bowls in their own hands.' Due to China's large population, which reaches 1.4 billion, and a per capita arable land of only 1.4 mu, ranking 126th in the world, the grain issue is closely related to China's stability. This photo series captures scenes of grain drying in rural areas of the mountainous regions of Yunnan in southwest China. Because these regions have high mountains and steep slopes, the houses built there are unique, often in weird and varied ways on the steep terrain, resulting in different grain drying methods. As China promotes urbanization and industrialization, many young and middle-aged rural residents migrate to cities for work. Consequently, the task of drying grain falls to the elderly and women who remain at home, who take on this arduous work. The photos in this series were taken between 2010 and 2017.1. On October 15, 2016, photographed in Mozuodui Village, Yuanjiang, Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, China. Every autumn harvest season, villagers dry the rice they have harvested from the fields on the rooftops of their homes. These local houses are called 'Tuzhang houses'.
