Leaning against the walls of the Scaligero Castle, the church was initially a chapel that served the small community, the Captain and the twenty or so guards on duty. The building dates back to the mid-1300s. In the 15th century it was decorated with a cross vault and the frescoes of 1500, followed by various painters, seem more of a votive nature. In the seventeenth century a covered room with a barrel vault was built.
In ancient times it was called Santa Maria del Ponte: in fact, a precious effigy of the Madonna and Child is venerated, painted on stone, which bears the Scaligeri coat of arms.
