Chartres is located in a region inhabited since prehistoric times, as attested by megalithic monuments and objects from the Neolithic period.The current department of Eure-et-Loir corresponds to the central part of the territory of the Carnutes, of which Chartres was the capital, under the name of Autricum. Chartres-Autricum was a large city, supplied with water by two aqueducts, and there was an important amphitheater, at least one forum and also temples.
