The Presidio of San Francisco has its own history separate from the city itself, going back to Colonial Spanish days of 1776. The cemetery was not established until 1854, after the Mexican American war. These cemeteries in this presidio are the last cemeteries within the city of San Francisco, as this is federal land, not city land so cannot be relocated, like all the others had been. This United States Army Chaplains Memorial is the final resting place of some 30,000 military fallen and veterans, as well as their family. The cemeteries, like the military, are completely interfaith, and although it is designed as a Chaplains Memorial, it is available to all military members without regard to their duties. This memorial is in front of the Presidio Chapel.
