The importance and spectacular nature of this formation has led it to be included as one of the eight natural monuments of Galicia. It has also been a Point of Geological Interest with international rank since 1983.The Courel Syncline is a large lying fold formed in the lower Carboniferous, that is, more than 320 million years ago.
