The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma de Mallorca,Spain. The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma more commonly referred to as La Seu is a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral located in Palma, Mallorca, Spain. The Aragonese king James I. the Conqueror decided to free the island of Mallorca from Arab domination and return it to Christian territory. In 1229, a big battle awaited him and when he was approaching the shores of the island with his fleet, he was caught by a big storm at sea. King James I made a promise that if he and his people escaped the storm and won the battle, he would build a dome in honor of the Virgin Mary. That s what happened, and in 1230 the foundation stone of the future cathedral was laid on the ruins of the Arab mosque.Like all other Gothic cathedrals, this one was not finished at the time of its creation, but was worked on for several more centuries. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary in 1346, and was completed in 1601. The western part of the cathedral collapsed during an earthquake in 1851, and was restored during a major reconstruction in 1904-1914.
