| Remparts of the preserved medieval fortified city, La Cité de Carcassonne was founded in the Gallo-Roman period. On UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. The largest medieval city in Europe with its city walls still intact. Was besieged from 1st to 15th of August 1209 during the early phase of the War against the Cathars of the Languedoc. Was restored in 1853 by the French architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Featured in the novel Labirinth by Kate Moss. |
