The fountain of piazza del Catalone is a small fountain built over the years around the Unification of Italy by Pius IX, Mastai Ferretti 1846-1878, to expand the water supply of the neighborhood located near the basilica of San Pietro. The fountain, isolated in the center of the open space that connects the road of Borgo Pio to Piazza del Catalone, benefited from the new volume of water brought to the city thanks to the restructuring of the Marcio aqueduct, completed by the pontiff in 1870.
The fountain, designed between 1870 and 1878 by the architect and sculptor Francesco Buffa, is made up of a rectangular gable travertine aedicula set against a brick construction. Below the tympanum there is a marble oval with the papal coat of arms triregno and keys. In the central part, a simple cinnamon pours the water into the oval hanging tray below, from which it falls into the ground drainage system delimited by a semicircle frame formed by a travertine edge, which encloses a cobblestone pavement
