Named after a Revolutionary War general, the original fort was a log and earthen affair built on Shutes Island which was much larger then. A severe hurricane destroyed the fort which was rebuilt in 1810. During the 1850`s it became part of a three part network that also included Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie. It`s armament included 14 24 pound cannon, 4 42 pound guns, and 4 8 inch howitzers plus other assorted weapons.
