The Carmelite Chapel and Monastery Cristo Rey has a history going back to 1576 Spain, who brought it to Mexico in 1604. When the Mexican Constitution of 1917 tried to limit the power of the Catholic Church, this led to severe persecution of Catholic clerics, there was a devastating war from 1926 to 1929 known as the Cristo War, causing many to flee to the United States, some, like the Carmelite Chapel and Monastery Cristo Rey settling in San Francisco, on 4 October 1927, coincidently the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi. |
