| On April 12, 1861 southern forces fired the opening shot igniting the Civil War on Union occupied Fort Sumter. For almost a day and a half the Confederate army under General P.G.T. Beauregard fought to capture Fort Sumter from Union Major Robert Anderson. Anderson surrendered to the Confederate army, remained in Confederate hands until it was evacuated as Sherman marched through South Carolina in February 1865. |
