In the extreme northwest of Portugal, between the Minho and Alto Tras-os-Montes are the Serra da Serra do Peneda and Geres, together an unique protected area, which is recognized as a National Park. The areas are crossed by large rivers and small streams flowing into the reservoirs behind dams, as in the lake of Canicada. Fires have destroyed the trees in the mountains behind during periods of drought.
