Speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour are possible during the jump. Eventually the rope breaks the jumper's fall after which it bounces up and down several more times and finally comes to a stop. Bungee jumping is all about the thrill of jumping in and bouncing back. Up to and including 2020 the counter in the Netherlands stood at one fatality. This happened during a bungee jump performance in 1993 at an event in the Brabant village of Hapert. The man who died was the instructor of a team that would provide a demonstration. Because he wanted to jump with somersaults he had no extra protection on his legs. About halfway through the jump it turned out that he was no longer attached to the elastic. From a height of more than thirty meters he fell to the ground next to the air cushion. He was instant dead. Hundreds of visitors witnessed the accident.
