San Francisco`s tall, white pyramidal building is very iconic as the Transamerica building, but many do not realize that was not the original Transamerica building. Standing right in the intersection of 701 Montgomery Street is the original Transamerica building. Built in 1908 for the Banco Populare Italiano Overaia Fugazi. Although AP Giannini was founder of Bank of Italy, he was also on the Board of Directors of Fugazi bank, and eventually took control of the bank, and building. This became the original Transamerica headquarters, as a holding company of the six separate banks now owned by Giannini. Interesting to note, the original Bank of Italy is also a triangle shape building, just across the street, and the new Transamerica Building is just one block away. The building today is the home the Church of Scientology. As seen 19 October 2022.
