Pictured is a bronze statue of Khedive Ismail in the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo, Egypt. Ismail Pasha was Khedive of Egypt and conqueror of Sudan from 1863 to 1879, when he was removed under pressure from Great Britain and France. He greatly modernized Egypt and Sudan during his reign, investing heavily in industrial and economic development, urbanization, and the expansion of the country`s boundaries in Africa. However, his policies put the Khedivate of Egypt and Sudan in severe debt which led to his ultimate toppling from power in 1879.
