The monastery was founded during the Second Bulgarian state at the beginning of the XII century. He has twice been destroyed and looted by the Turkish invaders (in XIVi XVII centuries), but quickly recovered in both cases, to keep the Bulgarian spirit and faith. The monastery has often served as a refuge for the Bulgarian Enlightenment and the revolutionaries.
