A large wood gear and gate block the front entrance to the Slitting House at the Saugus Iron Works. The Saugus Iron Works originally named Hammersmith is a national historic landmark and part of the National Parks Service since 1968. Upon entering the park visitors are greeted by a beautiful 17th century home. Known as the Iron Works House, it was not part of the original compound. It was built
