| Water Rail Rallus aquaticus. It is a marsh bird, often heard, rarely seen, and when seen, usually walking along the edge of a reedbed or other aquatic vegetation. It is considerably smaller than the coot, but larger than the waterfowl. It is easily recognisable by its long, thin beak. The adult is brown above with black spots, the underside and sides of the head are plain grey, and the flanks are thickly striped with black. The white undertail and red beak are striking. |
