It lives in waters within forests, lakes and rivers and sea shores where there are old trees. It builds its nest in trees and rock cavities. Its nest is usually close to the seaside, often on top of a dry tree. As its name suggests, its main food is fish. In addition, it hunts frogs, water salamanders and water snakes. If necessary, it catches reptiles and mammals on land. This bird, called the diving eagle, flies high with its wide wings and attacks its prey with a hard landing. Its feet are directed towards its prey. In this position, it can grab the fish immediately. Its sharp, long and curved claws are very suitable for this job. It dives by closing its wings and as soon as it grabs its prey, it takes off and starts eating its fish on a rock or a pole.
