According to Hindu mythology, Bhagirath performed penance to bring the River Ganga from Heaven to Earth. To suppress the force of the descent, Lord Shiva absorbs the falling water in His matted hair, and releases it gradually to form the river. Ganga is portrayed as a Goddess and is symbolically shown standing on Shiva's hair. Picture shot at Shiva Temple, Murudeshwar, Karnataka, India
