One of the best-known birds of prey of the hawk family, the largest eagle. Widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, where it inhabits mainly mountains, to a lesser extent flat open and semi-open landscapes. Avoids residential areas and is sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance. Sedentary throughout most of its range, living in pairs near the nest at the northern periphery of its range and at high elevations, some birds move to less snow-covered areas. It hunts a variety of game weighing from 0.4 to 5 kg, most often hares, rodents and many species of birds, and feeds on carrion.
