Statue of an original inhabitant of Begijnhof in Amsterdam. Begijnhof is both a semi-private courtyard and one of the most visited tourism landmarks in the center of Amsterdam..This urban inner court was founded during the Middle Ages, originally as a beguinage. Beguines were Christian lay orders in the 13th to 16th centuries. Their members lived in semi-monastic communities but did not take formal religious vows and could chose to marry (but then had to leave).
