The over 1050-year-old city between Hamburg and Hanover is one of the most fascinating cities in northern Germany. Its historic architecture in the style of brick Gothic stands in attractive contrast to the lively, young city life. Lüneburg remained undamaged during the Second World War, so that the city has a closed, medieval townscape - one of the reasons that led to Lüneburg regaining the title of Hanseatic city in October 2007. Everywhere in the city center, visitors encounter the history of the city, whose most important commodity was salt. Salt was boiled in the saltworks for over 1000 years, and the city became rich and prestigious in the Middle Ages through trading in the then precious "white gold".
