The Greek part of the name, acanthus, refers to the leaves having thorns, while the Latin part, mollis, means `soft or smooth`. This is an apt description for these large, shiny green leaves. These leaves were recognized as being beautiful even back in ancient Greece, with the 5th century BC sculpture Callimachus being the earliest known to employ these, on the tops of columns for public buildings. This is part of the style now know as Corinthian.
