This is the easternmost county in the Catalan Pyrenees, and the northernmost tip of the Costa Brava. It opens out at the foot of the Pyrenees as they sweep down to the sea over the jagged rocky shores of Cap de Creus. The typically Mediterranean vegetation is the result of the mild climate enjoyed in this area. The county capital is Figueres.
The main sights here are dolmens and menhirs, the Greek and Roman ruins at Empúries, the Romanesque churches, and the legacy of Salvador DalÃÂ. Much of the landscape is protected Aiguamolls de lââ¬â¢EmpordàNatural Park, Cap de Creus Natural Park, Albera Mountains and Bassegoda Peak
