Basilica di San Lorenzo Maggiore, Roman Column, Milano, Milan, Lombardy, Italy, Europe. Milan is the capital of the Lombardy region and of the metropolitan city of the same name, center of one of the most populous metropolitan areas in Europe it is also the second most populous municipality in Italy, after Rome. The myth has it that it was founded around 590 BC by a Celtic tribe belonging to the Insubres group and belonging to the Golasecca culture. The city was conquered by the ancient Romans in 222 BC
