The Cauvery River flowing across the Deccan Plateau takes a plunge over the cliffs, near the town of Shivasamudra, to form the magnificent Gaganchukki Falls. A few miles upstream, to the southwest of the town, the river splits to form the eastern arm of the falls, known as the Barachukki Falls. Barachukki Falls is wider than the Gaganchukki Falls, with a shorter drop. However, the river is segmented before the drop, giving rise to more streams and more falls. With the Cauvery River in full flow during the period of the southwest monsoon, lasting from July to October, we can see close to 20-25 waterfalls in one view. The lush greenery covering the brown rocks and the clear blue skies makes for a fantastic sight. The falls are located about 90 miles from the city of Bangalore, in the state of Karnataka, India.
