Asparagus retrofractus L. is a perennial clustered herbaceous plant in the family Asparagaceae and genus Asparagus. The plant can reach a height of up to 3 meters. The stem is cylindrical or nearly quadrilateral in shape, with a woody base and a gray or grayish brown color. The tender stem is covered with purple green scales at each node, which are long lanceolate in shape. The leaves are slender, tender, needle shaped, and arranged in clusters, resembling the leaves of a five leaf pine. The old leaves are dark green, the upper half is yellow green, the second half is dark green, and the new leaves are emerald green. Spherical inflorescence, corolla, white or milky white, with rich floral aroma and uniform flowering. After the small flowers wither, the whole plant withers the next day. The berry initially appears light green, then dark green on the surface with gray wax powder, and turns purple red after two months. Mature fruit, wrinkled, brown in color. The seeds are black and the flowering and fruiting period is from July to August.
