This portrait probably shows Giovanni Arnolfini, a wealthy Italian merchant resident in Bruges, and his wife. The couple is shown in a richy furnished living room; beds were a common feature of such room. The mirror on the back wall reflects two figures in a doorway. It is painted by Jan van Eyck, considered one of the most original and complex paintings in Western art, because of its beauty, complex iconography, geometric orthogonal perspective, and expansion of the picture space with the use of a mirror.
