Microplastics are fragments of any type of plastic less than 5 mm that cause pollution by entering natural ecosystems from a variety of sources. Primary microplastics are small pieces of plastic that are purposefully manufactured. Secondary plastics are small pieces of plastic derived from the breakdown of larger plastic debris, both at sea and on land. Nanoplastics are thought to be a risk to environmental and human health.
