| Pictured is an anhingha water bird perched on a lifeless log at the edge of the Chobe River in Chobe National Park in Botswana, Africa. The binomial name is Anhinga anhingha. It is also called the snakebird, American darter, or water turkey. The origin of the name is apparent when the bird is swimming. Only the neck appears above water, so the bird looks like a snake ready to strike. The bird was photographed from the Chobe River on a safari boat from the historic Chobe Game Lodge. |
