Nostoc is a genus of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, that belongs to the phylum Cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria are a group of photosynthetic bacteria that are capable of producing oxygen through photosynthesis. Nostoc is particularly interesting because of its ability to form colonies or clusters of cells called "gelatinous masses" or "nodules" in various habitats, including terrestrial and aquatic environments.
