Aiud is one of the oldest citadels in Transylvania, the existence of its fortifications being confirmed as early as the Tatar invasion of 1241; however, there are hypotheses a land rampart existed on site as early as the 3rd century AD. Its stone walls are 1.2 meters (approximately 4 feet) thick.
