Image shows a Snowy Egret and Killdeer hunting together along the Arkansas River in Southeast Colorado. Noticed the blazing white of the egret and snuck down to get picture and the Killdeer joined him in the hunt. The snowy egret is a small white heron. The genus name comes from the Provençal French for the little egret aigrette, a diminutive of aigron, `heron`. The species name thula is the Araucano for the Black-necked Swan, applied to this species in error by Chilean naturalist Juan Ignacio Molina in 1782. The killdeer is a large plover found in the Americas. It was described and given its current scientific name in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus in the 10th edition of his Systema Naturae. There are three subspecies. The killdeer`s common name comes from its often-heard call.
