In the western highlands of Guatemala, there is a province very popular among tourists from all over the world. Solola, which is a department of about a thousand square kilometers has a Volcanic Lake called Lake Atitlan, which is a key feature and major attraction as Guatemala’s most beautiful lake, and its deepest, also surrounded by small towns all over its edge. It also has several tourist attractions, and as a hotspot and hub, reunites visitors from all over the world. One of these places is known as Indian Nose, “Nariz del Indio”ÂÂÂÂ in Spanish, or locally as Rupala’j Kristali which is Tzutuj’il, a local mayan language, for Mayan Face. This place is a mountain that sits next to the lake at 2,863 meters 9,393 feet, and overlooks the towns of San Pedro, Santa Clara y San Marcos and its name comes from the fact that the profile of the mountain looks like a sleeping Indian. The peak is a site considered sacred by the Mayans, who would conduct religious services and prayers at the top. It is also a great viewing spot to see the sunrise over the lake and mountains around. It is also a place of tragedy, since some tourists who have made the hike have died tragically after falling off the cliffs, like the case of British tourist, Catherine Shaw, who died from injuries sustained after falling off the trail during a spiritual trip up the mountain in March, 2019.
