Achiote (Bixa orellana) is a perennial, tall shrub or small evergreen tree native to Central America. It is a source of annatto, a natural orange-red condiment. Sometimes called lipstick tree it bears clusters of bright white or pink flowers that resemble single wild roses, at the tips of the branches. Fruits are globular capsules arranged in clusters and are spiky looking red-brown seed pods covered in soft spines.
