A view of an abandoned coal tower for steam locomotives at the Thurmond Train Depot, located near the New River Gorge National Park. The town of Thurmond in Fayette County, West Virginia, was a coal boomtown in the early 1900's. Thurmond was the heart of the New River Gorge, carrying shipments of coal from the surrounding coal fields. The Thurmond Depot is now a New River Gorge National Park and Preserve visitor center. |
