Fort Bowie is located between the Dos Cabezas and Chiricahua Mountains in southern Arizona, where the Chiricahua Apaches lived. The fort was built to fight them. After the Chiricahuas surrendered in 1886, Fort Bowie had no further function and was abandoned in 1894. The rectangular foundation in the foreground once was the school. It also served as court-martial room, library and chapel. The building on the left is the visitor center.
