Pincushion flowers, Scabiosa Atropurpurea, also known as mourning bride, Egyptian rose, mournful widow, Mediterranean sweet scabious, is a genus in the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae, of flowering plants. Blossoms are comprised of hundreds of tine florets, and the many, often multicolored anthers appear as colorful candy sprinkles on top of the flower head. The common name `scabious` comes from the herb`s traditional usage as a folk medicine to treat scabies, an illness that causes a severe itching sensation. |
