Pictured are the ruins of the Post Hospital`s steward quarters at the Fort Davis National Historic Site in Fort Davis, Texas. The hospital steward was responsible for the day- to- day operation of the hospital. It was essential that the steward have a good medical background since he mixed and administered medications, checked on the condition of patients, and at times was called upon to extract teeth. Fort Davis was established in 1854 on the San Antonio–El Paso Road through west Texas and named after Jefferson Davis, who was then the Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce.
