The scenographic oval of the colonnade, the famous work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, realizes in Piazza San Pietro the symbolic embrace that the church addresses to its faithful. The colonnade with four rows of columns, made for Alexander VII in 1656-67, is designed so that, seen from the fires of the ellipse - indicated, on the pavement, by a circular stone surrounded by a marble ring - appears composed of a single row of columns. |
