The artificial caves in the cliff of the Matala bay were created in the Neolithic Age. In the 1st and 2nd centuries the caves were used as tombs. In the 60s & 70s the international media became intrigued about the hippie travellers making their homes in the caves at Matala beach. Now Matala is a small village living mainly from tourism. |
