The ÃŽles du Salut (Islands of Salvation) are a group of three small islands about 6.8 miles (11 km) off the coast of French Guiana in the Atlantic Ocean. The islands were used as penal colony of Cayenne (French: Bagne de Cayenne) and are known under the name Devils Island. The prison opened in 1852 and was closed down in 1953. This is the ruin of the workshop for prisoners of the penal colony. |
