This section of Fort Sumter faces Charleston Harbor. Originally, the fort had three levels but two were damaged/destroyed during the fighting. Bricks used to build the fort came from local plantations. Only the lower level was rebuilt. The rebuilt fort was still in use until it was decommissioned in 1947 after World War II. It had been used to track German submarines just off shore.
