Island fox on Santa Cruz Island in Smugglers Cove. One of smallest canid species in world, the Island Fox lives on six of the eight Channel Islands off the Southern California coast. It is descendent of mainland gray fox and is currently listed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Each isle has its own subspecies. It is largest of Channel Islands native mammals. |
