Longtime U.S. Congressman and courtly southern gentleman, Claude Pepper, is joined by Ruth Simon, mother and stand-in for her son, U.S. Senator from Illinois, Paul Simon. The pair join hands at a gathering for senior citizens in Chicago, Illinois in 1984. Simon went on to upset incumbent Charles Percy. Pepper, a liberal Democrat was especially strong on labor and welfare issues and was a venerated hero of the elderly, having authored significant legislation in their behalf. He died on May 30, 1989 at the age of 88.
